South Carolina Arbor Day Observation

South Carolina observes a state Arbor Day annually on the first Friday of December, today! This morning my two remaining homeschoolers and I volunteered at the Clemson Extension Office in Beaufort to assist in the distribution of free trees in honor of Arbor Day. This year's selection included five native trees: Bald Cypress, Longleaf pine, Redbud, Crabapple and Persimmon.

We had the pleasure of working under the direction of Laura Lea Rose, Clemson Extension horticulture agent. This was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about native trees and their care, meet and talk with local master gardeners, receive trees and interact with the public. We enjoyed lively conversation with several people who came to take advantage of the tree giveaway and even met a few neighbors! My children had the opportunity to serve our community, do a little public speaking as they conversed with fellow volunteers and patrons and learned a bit more about the specialties of the Clemson Extension staff.

The Meaning of Arbor Day
The first Arbor Day ceremonies took place over a hundred years ago on the windswept prairies of the Nebraska Territory. Arbor Day became a tradition through the work of one man - J. Sterling Morton, editor of Nebraska's first newspaper and later U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

Although Morton loved his home in Nebraska, he missed the green forests of his native New York. He found that Nebraska's high winds blew the soil away when he plowed fields on the open prairie; so he decided to plant trees as wind-breaks. Morton's successful tree-planting project encouraged him to promote the idea throughout Nebraska, and on April 10, 1872, Arbor Day became a state holiday. Over a million trees were planted on that single day.

Morton's idea quickly caught on in the rest of the United States. In 1883 the first Arbor Day school celebrations were held in Cincinnati. Today Arbor Day is celebrated in almost every state and U.S. territory as well as numerous foreign countries.

Because ideal conditions for planting vary throughout the nation, Arbor Day is celebrated at different times of the year, depending on the climate of the state. An Arbor Day for the State of South Carolina was created by legislation in 1934. We celebrate on the first Friday in December because that is the time in South Carolina when plants are dormant, there is plenty of rainfall, and a tree's roots suffer less from the shock of transplanting. The first Friday in December is a time not only to celebrate Arbor Day in South Carolina but also to think about the benefits planted trees can provide our homes, schools, and institutions; our cities and towns; and of course our forests. For every single tree we plant on Arbor Day, millions more must be planted in South Carolina's forests to keep up with the country's need for wood and wood products.

Arbor Day marks the beginning of planting season in South Carolina. It is a holiday that emphasizes the importance of all trees in our lives, whether they grow in the city or in the forest. "Arbor Day," said J. Sterling Morton, "is not like other holidays. Each of these reposes on the past, but Arbor Day preposes on the future."
Planting and Caring for TreesPlanting a tree on Arbor Day is taking the first step toward assuring that it will thrive. Planting is most successful if done during December, January, or February while trees are dormant and new growth has not yet begun. When hundreds of seedlings are planted on a forest site, either machine planters or hand crews with dibbles make the planting job faster. Basic principles apply, however, whether you are planting one tree or one thousand trees.

lend beauty to the South Carolina landscape;
cool us with the shade from their branches and the moisture from their leaves;
reduce air pollution;
protect us from damaging winds and water;
provide food and homes for birds and wild animals;
camouflage harsh scenery and soften angular cityscapes;
filter noise;
prevent soil erosion;
mean about 30,000 jobs to South Carolina; and
provide more than 5,000 wood, paper, and chemical products.

Here are some basic guidelines for planting (see Newly Planted Trees - Strategies for Survival for more detailed instructions):

Choose young, healthy seedlings or saplings to plant - they stand a better chance of surviving.
Select your planting site carefully. Keep in mind that as your tree grows, the roots and branches will spread; so allow adequate space for future growth.
Dig a hole at least twice the width, but equal in depth to the size of the root system. Use the original soil removed from the hole to refill around the root system. Once filled, place mulch material such as pine bark, dead leaves, or some other semi-decayed material over the soil surface.
Newly planted trees need regular watering during the spring, summer, and fall of the first year. Evergreens, because they retain their leaves, need to be watered regularly in the winter too. Do not water every day. Instead, give your tree a good soaking once a week. Fertilizer is usually not need in the first year.

To help you with your program, the local Clemson Extension or Forestry Commission office has a suggested lesson plans, including ideas teachers may find useful in educating children in the value of trees.

Civil War Related Events

Civil War history fans have a broad variety of options over the next 2 weeks to satisfy their cravings to learn more about this pivotal event in United States history. Some opportunities are free. Some opportunities require tickets. Some opportunities require the payment of fees.

Port Royal Plantation is hosting a re-enactment event [1] and lectures on Sat., Nov. 5th.
On the true anniversary of the Battle of Port Royal [2], Mon., Nov. 7th, we are hosting Mike Coker, author of the Battle of Port Royal in Bluffton Branch at 2 pm and again at 6:30pm in Frissell Hall, Penn Center. During the evening author book/talk, sale and signing session at Penn Center, Coker will be joined by Dr. Larry Rowland and Stephen Hoffius, editors of the Civil War in South Carolina, and Neil Baxley, author of No Prouder Fate. Penn Center is co-sponsor of the evening session.

On Thurs., Nov. 10th Kristine Dunn Johnson, author of No Holier Spot of Ground: Confederate Monuments and Cemeteries of South Carolina [3] will share some of the history of the Beaufort US National Cemetery [4] at the Beaufort County Historical Society meeting held in the Yacht Club on Lady's Island beginning at Noon.

Fri., Nov. 11th USC-B, Penn Center, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute are co-sponsoring a Civil War symposium at the USC Performing Arts Center, 9 am - Noon.

Civil War photography expert, Bob Zeller, will present rare 3D digitized stereographs of President Abraham Lincoln, his inauguration, the White House, the hanging of the assassination conspirators, and many of the most famous Civil War battlefields, like Antietam and Gettysburg, taken by famous Civil War photographers. The audience gets to wear 3D glasses. The show also includes three of the earliest photographs of St. Helena Island. Zeller will autograph his new book, Lincoln in 3D.
The Battle of Port Royal—“The Day of Big Gun Shoot” Presenter: Dr. Stephen Wise, Dir. of Parris Island Museum. November 7, 1861 heralded one of the earliest amphibious operations of the Civil War in the South. Dr. Wise expertly narrates the course of the military strategies implemented by the Union forces and the Confederacy and the unfolding of war in Beaufort, South Carolina and surrounding Sea Islands.
Dr. Lawrence Rowland, co-editor of “The Civil War in SC” will discuss and sign his latest book.

The Civil War Symposium is a component of Penn Center's Annual Heritage Days [5] celebration.

Monday, December 12th features Chris Jones returning to the stage performing a high energy set tracing the evolution of the guitar. This performance will include Jones on his custom double neck guitar and harmonica.

Naval Hospital offers tours of Fort Frederick, historic sites

The Camp Saxton Site is nationally significant as an intact portion of the camp occupied from early November 1862 to late January 1863 by the 1st South Carolina Volunteers, the first black regiment mustered into regular service in the United States Army during the Civil War, and as the site of the elaborate ceremonies held here on New Year’s Day 1863 which formally announced and celebrated the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves in areas then “in rebellion” against the United States. Throughout the summer of 1862 President Lincoln carefully considered the inclusion of blacks in the Union war effort, both in terms of the effect their emancipation could have on the Confederacy and in terms of the work they could perform as laborers and even soldiers in the U.S. Army. By August he was ready to implement a policy permitting his generals to use all the means at their disposal, including readily available black manpower, to help preserve the Union. On August 22nd Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton authorized Rufus Saxton to “arm, equip, and receive into the service of the United States such volunteers of African descent as you may deem expedient, not exceeding 5,000.” The Camp Saxton Site is an approximately six-acre wooded and greenspaced site, bounded on the east by the Beaufort River, on the west by the complex at the United States Naval Hospital Beaufort, on the north by the boat basin off the Beaufort River and on the south by the ruins of Fort Frederick. Listed in the National Register February 2, 1995.

Below is an article that recently appeared in the Beaufort Gazette written by Patrick Donohue.

Officials at Naval Hospital Beaufort are hoping area residents take advantage of recently-implemented monthly tours of Fort Frederick and other historic sites behind its gates.

Since April, sailors and other staff at the hospital have led guided tours of the base's historic sites, including the ruins of Fort Frederick, a 276-year-old British fort built on the Beaufort River to protect the area from attacks by Indians and by Spaniards from St. Augustine, Fla.

The free tours are conducted on the third Saturday of every month, and can be coordinated through the hospital's public affairs office. Visits to the fort can also be arranged through the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, according to its website.

Capt. Joan Queen, the hospital's commanding officer, said the hospital is trying to accommodate recent requests from town of Port Royal officials to allow more public access to Fort Frederick and other sites behind the hospital's gates.
Access to the sites has been limited since the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks led to increased security at the hospital.
"Those sites are important pieces of our community's history and our nation's history, and we want to make sure that the public has as much access to those places as possible," Queen said. "We really appreciate all of the support we receive from the community, and this was one of the ways that we can return that support."

The three-acre Fort Frederick site is part of the 127 acres of riverfront land the Navy bought in 1945 to build Naval Hospital Beaufort. The fort site was donated to the state as part of the National Park Service's Federal-Lands-to-Parks Program in 1997.

All that remains of Fort Frederick today are 3-foot-high walls of tabby -- a building material made of lime, sand and oyster shells that predates concrete -- marking the southwest bastion. The northeast bastion is submerged 100 feet into the Beaufort River and is visible at low tide, according to DNR.
Queen said she hopes the tours are the beginning of more access to the hospital's historic sites.
"We're working with DNR and the town of Port Royal to look at other ways the public can gain access," she said.

Naval Hospital Beaufort is offering the tour at 10 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month. Those wanting to take it must sign up at least 24 hours in advance.

Groups of 10 or more can schedule a tour separately, but the hospital needs at least a week's notice, and approval is dependent on availability of a guide to escort the group.

Create a Family History Unit Study

Family history is a huge topic of conversation in my family. My grandparents, great aunts, other family members and both of my parents have over the years shared enormous amounts of information and stories about themselves and other family members, enough to fill volumes of books and I’ve enjoyed hearing them tremendously. I’ve made it a project for each of my children interview their grandparents and glean from their experiences. Listening to those stories over the years prompted me to do some research about my family to find out what information about my family has been recorded and documented. This has been and continues to be an exciting journey that has included hours of searching on Family Search, a website similar to those listed in the article below as well as a fieldtrip to the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.

Including your own family history in your curriculum for social studies or history can prove to be an exciting adventure for you and your children. You can discover interesting information about your background that ties in to the period of history you’re studying. Tracing a family’s movements allows you to do geography and cartography. Make your own family time line. Locate cousins in other states or even countries! Write about your discoveries and share it with your family!

Our local library has an abundance of information available to help you get started on a genealogy unit. Libraries have research helps and knowledgeable staff on hand to assist and direct you as you go along. The article below is from our own Grace Cordial. Mrs. Cordial has been responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Beaufort District Collection at the Beaufort County Library since 1999. The Beaufort District Collection exists to acquire, preserve, maintain and make accessible a research collection of permanent value which records the history, culture, and environment of our part of the South Carolina lowcountry. Besides the research room, Cordial oversees the “Virtual BDC:” the BDC web pages, the Online Obituary Index, the Phosphate, Farms, and Family digital collection, and the Connections blog.

Among her duties is to coordinate or present programs about local history and our coastal environment, including the occasional instructional session about how to perform historical and/or genealogical research. So take advantage of her expertise and begin your genealogy study soon!

For a number of years, Family Tree Magazine has been searching the internet for the best genealogy websites. In 2010, they highlighted free sites. In 2011, they've compiled a list of the 101 best, including both free and premium sites.

Pay attention to the individual entry for each website because "though some mostly free sites charge for premium services, you’ll see a symbol only next to sites where you have to pony up for the core content." So, it's a mixed bag of pay-to-view, pay-to-view some, and pay-to-view everything.

From The Beacon: Summer reading kicks off at library

Every summer libraries across the country offer exciting programs to encourage reading during the summer months. The kick off for the Beaufort County public library system began yesterday, June 6. Each library in our system offers the local community it serves special summer programs and activities that support the theme. You can read more about this year's summer reading program for all ages, the themes, prizes and more in the article below. Get ready for excitement, adventure, thrills and more from the books you will read this summer!

The heat has arrived, school buses will soon be in storage and the beach is beckoning -- summer is almost here. That also means it's time for the annual Summer Reading Program at the Beaufort County public library system. We have been hard at work planning and preparing for this exciting annual event.

According to the American Library Association, the annual Summer Reading Program began in the 1890s as a way to persuade school children to visit the library and develop lifelong reading habits. While it started as a way to promote literacy with children, the program has evolved over the past century into an enjoyable and worthwhile annual string of events in which all children, teens and adults can participate.

Funded by Beaufort County, our Friends of the Library groups and our Public Library Foundation, the official Summer Reading Program begins June 13th and concludes July 23rd. There will be branch-specific prizes and countywide grand prizes. This year's overall Summer Reading theme is "Travel." So whether you have plans to escape to a faraway destination or stay here in the Lowcountry, the Beaufort County library branches will provide you and your family with plenty of materials to keep you busy -- regardless of your travel plans (or lack thereof).

"One World, Many Stories" is the theme for children ages 4 to grade five, and "You Are Here" is the theme for teens (grades 6 to 12). Each participant signs an agreement to read (or have read to them) a minimum number of books. A visit to the library once a week will earn them a small prize. Once they fulfill their agreement, they earn a certificate, medal and a chance at winning one of our grand prizes.
Children and teens can visit their branch library to register beginning Monday. Check with your local library's children's room for more information for both teen and children's Summer Reading programs.
"Novel Destinations" is the travelworthy theme for adults ages 18 and older. Adults can read whatever they choose and submit reviews. Each review gets one entry into the prize pool, and names will go into prize drawings at the respective branches. Adults may submit their reviews beginning June 13 (there's no need to register). This year, reviews can be submitted online or to your branch's reference desk. Blank book review forms are located at all branches. There are no limits to how many reviews participants can submit. Reviews must have a minimum of 50 words in order to be eligible for prizes. If participants are feeling extra creative, they can submit their reviews in poetry form.

It is one of the places we visit often to read, borrow materials, participate in activities, meet and greet neighbors and our wonderful library staff. 10 Ways Libraries Matter in a Digital Age | American Libraries Magazine [1] was written by Greg Landgraff as an updated response to why libraries still matter - and will continue to matter - into the foreseeable future and beyond.

Of the 10 reasons given, (and they are all right on the money) the two that most directly relate to a special collection such as the BDC are:

Libraries are hubs for preserving the past. Digital libraries are wondrous, but they exist, for the most part, because of the local and world treasures safeguarded by brick-and-mortar libraries, which keep them safe and accessible for future generations. We also work to help our patrons preserve their own materials.

Of course, this is what the BDC does. We bring the past to the present and future by taking good care of the materials we hold in trust, sharing those materials with customers who visit our Research Room, Branch Library Local History sections, the "Virtual BDC," or attend our BDC@ The Branches local history program series.

If you read Connections on a regular basis, I believe you already know that seldom does a month go by during which we fail to mention some preservation technique or disaster preparedness website or workshop. We want people to have the information they need to protect their family treasures and safeguard their persons.

Libraries are there in a crisis. After the recent tornadoes in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, Tuscaloosa Public Library offered college students a means to communicate with friends and family. When Hurricane Ike struck Houston September 13, 2008, the Central Library reopened within three days to help residents contact insurance companies and file federal aid applications. Libraries belong to their communities and do what it takes in times of need.

While, thankfully, we have not been tested by disaster, we do train to meet those tests should they come. For example, the County's Emergency Management department will make use of volunteer Library staff to help man the PALS Points Of Distribution in the recovery stages after a disaster. Training sessions to go over the PALS Recovery Function, re-entry responsibilities, staffing of warehouse/PODS, and how to fill out the required forms properly (Aren't there ALWAYS forms!) were held May 12th and 17th.

Take time to read all 10 reasons - particularly if you are one of those folks who is of the opinion that books are going away, the utility of libraries is miniscule numbered, and/or that librarians do nothing but let poor people, of the female and minor varieties, borrow books!

Do you dream of becoming a writer? Or an actor? A director or producer? A music composer or sound engineer? Perhaps a videographer or photographer? An artist? Entrepreneur? Theologian or philosopher?

This summer, from July 17-22, The Lamplighter Guild will offer a unique opportunity for students to cultivate excellence and skill in the area of their God-given giftedness.

At The Lamplighter Guild for Creative Disciplines, students in the Dramatic Arts track will receive hands-on training with the former writers and producers of The Chronicles of Narnia, Left Behind, and Les Miserables, as well as the popular radio drama, Adventures in Odyssey, and now Lamplighter Theatre. Join John Fornof, John Campbell, Todd Busteed, Allen Hurley, Philip Glasborrow, and Mark Hamby for a life-changing week of training, strategy, and vision.

This accomplished team will work alongside students to help hone their skills in writing, acting, sound design, music composition and engineering, and entrepreneurial strategies. Along the way, students will discover how a show is created: from brainstorming ideas to outlining and writing a script, directing and acting out character roles, creating sound effects, and ultimately, the final production.
Woven throughout the week will be an emphasis on Scriptural application in connection to entrepreneurial pursuits.
To make this a quality experience for each participant, we are limiting this event to 100 students. Space is limited, so we encourage you to register before March 15th.

The St Helena Library staff and volunteers invite you to come out and see Disney's 3D version of the famous Charles Dickens story A Christmas Carol. Miser Ebenezer Scrooge is awakened on Christmas Eve by spirits who reveal to him his own miserable existence, what opportunities he wasted in his youth, his current cruelties, and the dire fate that awaits him if he does not change his ways. Scrooge is faced with his own story of growing bitterness and meanness, and must decide what his own future will hold: death or redemption.

Men's Wildlife Supper

Homeschool dads, it's time again for the Community Bible Church Wildlife Supper and this year's guest is going to impact you like never before! Dave Roever was served in the Navy in Vietnam in 1968. In a combat situation he pulled the pin on a phosphorous grenade and was about to throw it when it exploded prematurely. The results were disastrous. Part of his face was blown off; his hands were permanently paralyzed; but the greatest potential danger Dave faced was an emotional one. His girlfriend was waiting for him in America. He had made plans for the future when he was going to be dis-charged from the service. These were just a few of the many things Dave considered as he lay in a hospital bed for months. Discover the miracle God worked in this man. This event is a great opportunity for homeschool dads to fellowship together with other dads and older your older sons.
The CBC Wildlife Supper is October 29, 2010 at 6:30 p.m. at the church, 638 Parris Island Gateway. in Beaufort. The evening begins with a buffet featuring venison, wild boar, shrimp, alligator, turkey, side dishes and dessert. You will be entertained with special music and you may even win a wonderful door prize.
Amazingly, there is no charge for this evening...there are only three requirements:
1. You must be a male.
2. you must pre-register
3. you must try to bring at least one guest who either does not attend church or does not yet know Jesus as his Lord and Savior.

About the Kiev Symphony Orchestra and Chorus

The Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Chorus was established by Roger McMurrin in 1993. His Goal was to introduce the Ukrainian audience to the great masterpieces of Western classical music, especially those that were forbidden in this country during the 70 years of Soviet rule.

Since 1993 the Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Chorus has grown into the largest private orchestra-choral group in Ukraine.

It comprises of 100 singers and 65 orchestra players. The instrumentalists are the best master players among the six state orchestras; these individuals were handpicked to make-up this dynamic Symphony.

●Alligators: Meet At the Nature Center. Discover modern-day dinosaurs during this enlightening look at our largest reptile. (All Ages, 30 minutes)

●Barrier Island Ecology: Meet at the Nature Center. This program will give participants an in-depth look at the four main habitats of Hunting Island, while instilling a desire to preserve and protect the barrier island as a whole. (All Ages, 1 Hour)

●Beach Walk: Meet at the Lighthouse for an interpretive talk about the physical changes that occur on a barrier island while exploring the biological aspects of the beach environment. (All ages, 1 hour)

●Crabbing: Meet at the Fishing Pier to learn about the life cycle of the Blue Crab, the methods of crabbing and the responsible use of this natural resource. $5 per person. Pre-registration is Required!!! (All Ages, 1.5 hrs)

●Gyotaku (fish printing): Meet at the Nature Center. Learn the art of gyotaku and create a one-of-a-kind souvenir from your visit. $5.00 per person. Must be at least 6 years old. Pre-registration is Required and you must bring your own t- shirt!!! (1 hour)

●Lighthouse Tour: Meet at the Lighthouse for a fascinating look at how it was built, and how it was moved over a hundred years ago! There is a $2.00 per person fee to climb the Lighthouse. Children
must be accompanied by an adult, and must be a minimum of 44 inches in height. (45 minutes)

●Nautical Flags: Meet at the Nature Center and learn how sailors communicated before the era of radios. Make your own set of nautical flags to create a unique decorative souvenir! $3 per person Pre-registration is required!! (6 years and up,1 hour)

●Nature Center Tour/Pier Walk: Meet at the Nature Center to explore our exhibits and meet our animals! Then go for an interpretive walk along the pier to learn some interesting facts about Hunting Island. (All Ages, 1 Hour)

●Pier Fishing: Meet at the Nature Center to learn some basics of fishing from a saltwater pier, a natural reef that many types of species call home! Fishing rods, bait and tackle are provided. $3 per person Pre-registration is required!! (6 years and up, 1.5 hours).

●Reptiles of the Lowcountry: Meet at the Nature Center. Prepare yourself for a close encounter with our native reptiles, including snakes, turtles, alligators and lizards. Live animals will be on hand. (All Ages, 1 Hour)

●Salt Marsh Kayaking: Meet at Russ Point Boat Landing. Learn the technique of kayaking while getting a unique guided tour of the salt marsh surrounding Hunting Island. Please bring sunscreen, drinking water, a snack and clothes and shoes that can get wet. No flip flops. No one under 8. Children ages 8-12 must be in a tandem with an adult. Children ages 13-17 must be accompanied on the trip by an adult. $40 per person. Pre-Registration is Required!!! Limited to 14 people. You must call the Kayak Farm (843) 838-2008 to register. (8 years & older, 2 hours)

● Sea Turtle Tracks: Meet at the Nature Center: This program will give visitors the opportunity to learn about sea turtles in general (body structure, different species, and life cycles) and sea turtle conservation on Hunting Island. (All ages, 1 hour)

●SC Native Americans: Meet at the Nature Center for an inside look at the life and culture of the Native Americans who once lived on the island. Build a dreamcatcher to scare off any bad dreams and make a unique souvenir. Pre-registration is required!! Must be at least 6 years old. $5 per person. (6 years and up, 1 hour)

●Secrets of the Salt Marsh: Meet at the Marsh Boardwalk for an interpretative talk about the salt marsh, one of the four ecosystems on Hunting Island. (All ages, 1 hour)

●Sharks of SC: Meet at the Nature Center to learn about the fiercest predators in the ocean that date back to the time of the dinosaurs. (All ages, 30 minutes)

●Wading/Water Birds of the SC LowCountry: Meet at the Nature Center to study the characteristics of the birds found in the Salt Marsh and on the Beach of Hunting Island. (All Ages, 1 Hour)

●Walk in the Woods: Meet at the Nature Center. Join a Naturalist for a hike through the Maritime forest. View ancient dunes, learn about the edible plants of the island and possibly see some of the creatures that call our forest home! (All Ages, 1 hour).

● For a fee of $99, the Passport Plus will afford the same admission privileges as an annual Park Passport, but will also include free admission for up to 4 persons for programs costing $8 and under.

StudySC website is a good place to start!

It's the start of a new school year, so today I want to highlight a relatively new, and continuously evolving, resource about history, culture, and the environment in South Carolina:

One aspect of information delivery that gets overlooked too often are librarian vetted websites such as StudySC [1]. StudySC [1], created by the South Carolina State Library, makes available a student-friendly environment arranged by grade level and by subject area where students can find the information they need fast. StudySC provides online content to support South Carolina-specific curriculum standards. And it just keeps getting better!

K-12 students can use StudySC [1] to:

•Discover websites from non-profits, educational sources, and government agencies on South Carolina topics
•Read articles from DISCUS databases and South Carolina periodicals
•View pictures, video, and artwork that represents South Carolina themes
•Explore primary documents from South Carolina history such as maps, photographs, and oral history
Educators can use StudySC [1] to:

•Discover content from trusted websites on South Carolina themes for use in your classroom
•Explore multimedia content such as videos, audio, photographs, and maps to make your lesson plans memorable
Each grade level in StudySC [1] now features a "History Before 1865" section that includes information for K-12 students on the history of South Carolina, from the first inhabitants through the Civil War. For example, explore the topic First South Carolinians [2] - "Meet the Native Americans who first called South Carolina home." To review the section from an elementary school level, click here.

Just remember that one doesn't have to be a teacher or a K-12 student to learn more about the history of this state and its people. St Helena Library Temporarily Closed

St. Helena Library Closed on 7/22 - 7/31 While School District Strips Floors

The St. Helena branch of the Beaufort County Library will be closed on Thursday, July 22 through Saturday, July 31 while workers refurbish the floors.

The library is housed inside St. Helena Elementary school until a new facility is completed at Penn Center. The school district has contracted to strip and refinish the floors at the school and this causes potent fumes that can make people sick.

St. Helena Library staff will be re-assigned temporarily to other library branches until the stripping has been completed.

Yes, it is time to make sure our summer reading lists are ready to pass out and watch our children enjoy the adventures found in great books. We will present books here that just might capture and hold the attention of your students this summer and on into the school year.

This week we present, God King, A Story in the Days of King Hezekiah, by Joanne Williamson.

This never-before published tale carries the reader back to Ancient Egypt and to the biblical Jerusalem. Around 701 B.C. Egypt is being ruled by the Kushite dynasty. Young Prince Taharka, a very minor royal son, succeeds unexpectedly to the throne of Kush and Egypt—a “divine” rulership. He begins to find his way...until a treacherous plot pushes him into sudden exile and into the hands of Amos, an emissary of King Hezekiah seeking help for Judea from the Egyptians against the Assyrians. 4H Livestock Fun Day

The St Helena Homesteaders 4H group attended the South Carolina 4-H Program livestock fun day Saturday, January 23. This program was designed to introduce youth and their families to the many areas that the livestock program has to offer. Youth were taught about and experienced animal care, handling and showing in a ring. The day consisted of youth being introduced to several animals including cows,pigs, goats and chickens. Workshops were taught by individuals who have shown these animals, animal specialist and general livestock specialists.

The day started with lunch sponsored by AgSouth who provided a great spread of grilled hamburgers, and fixings, along with a large variety of chips, cookies and soft drinks. Coffee and hot chocolate were big hits that day because it was very cold.

We had a terrific time at the livestock day, the kids enjoyed the presenters and their animals. Special thanks to all the 4H extension representatives who helped and served everyone, the Ulmer family for hosting the event, the persons who provided the animals and the presenters/teachers.

Through 4H kids and youth can learn how to care for and show
goats, pigs, chickens and cattle,while learning life skills including
confidence, discipline and independence.

The 4-H program is positive youth development that teaches
life skills through hands on learning and activities.

South Carolina 4-H/FFA Meat Goat Project

MEAT GOAT PARTICIPANT SELECTION -- 2010

Due to the drought experienced since 2007 the number of does (mother goats) has been drastically reduced not only in South Carolina but across the Southeast. This, in turn, will lead to the reduction in the number of wether goats that will be available to purchase for the 2010 4-H/FFA Meat Goat Project. The Meat Goat Project Committee remains committed to providing as many quality wethers to as many young people as possible; however, the number of wethers the committee will be able to secure for 2010 may be smaller than in past years. Since reduced availability of wethers is such a strong possibility, the Committee is establishing guidelines for use in the selection of participants for 2010. The following criteria have been established and will be utilized in the selection of participants from the applicant pool should the committee not be able to secure a sufficient number of wether goats:
 Membership – Must be a bona fide member of 4-H or FFA
 Application Deadline – Those applications postmarked past the application deadline will be removed from project consideration
 Refunds – No refunds will be given after May 7, 2010.
 Level of Participation in the project in past years will be considered –
o Number of shows in which the application competed
o Completion of the Data (Record) Book
 Age of the Applicant – Youth between the ages of 5 and 16 years will be given priority over those youth 17 and up
New applicants must have a signed statement from their Extension Agent or Agriculture Teacher stating that this applicant is believed to be an individual who can care for the animal and will be an active participant in the project activities.
It is not the desire of the Meat Goat Project Committee to eliminate anyone from participating in the project; however, if needed, the committee will use these guidelines in the selection of participants.

The committee will make use of the guidelines in the order of:
(1) Membership,
(2) Application Deadline,
(3) Level of Participation, and
(4) Age of Applicant to make the selection of project participants.

All decisions made by the committee regarding the selection of project participants will be final.

Each year we are asked how much this project will cost. We do have a few known costs; please do keep in mind prices on these items tend to fluctuate! It is also inevitable that some goats will incur a larger cost than others.

The above approximate cost does not include show supplies, housing (barn or shelter, fencing, etc.), feed buckets, or water buckets. There is also the question of what you will need for the shows. Take into account fuel for the trips, feed, feed buckets, water buckets, goat shampoo, water hose and nozzle, drying towels, goat leads, goat collars and show leads. We always recommend having more than 1 of everything; you never know when you just may need it!
Some of the Fairs are starting to charge for youth to show their goats. We do not know how much the fees will be or which shows will charge this year.

4H Pullet Chain Orientation Meeting

It is time to begin the 4-H Pullet Chain Project for 2010. Poultry has been a favorite project for 4-H members for many years. Thank you for showing an interest in this project.

To participate in this year’s 4-H Pullet Chain Project, your child must attend the orientation meeting on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 10:00 a.m., in the Clemson Kitchen of the B. T. Deloach County Office Building located at 201 Jackson Avenue, West in Hampton, South Carolina.

The orientation meeting will give an overview of the project in its entirety.

The 4-H Pullet Chain Program is open to all youths ages 9 to 19 residing in Hampton, Allendale, Barnwell, Bamberg, Beaufort, Colleton, Jasper and surrounding counties. A parent or legal guardian must attend the orientation meeting with their child. No baby chicks will be given out at the orientation meeting.

You may recall that for the past 5 years or so, the Library and Beaufort County Planning have put together some programs on whatever the SCIAA Archaeology Month theme of the year happened to be. Thus, we've covered Military archaeology, Native American archaeology, the connection between the lowcountry and the Caribbean archaeology, etc. Well, we are at it again.
Ian Hill, Historic Preservationist, County Planning and I have teamed together with Historic Beaufort Foundation and USC-B to sponsor a series of 6 programs in observance of Archaeology Month 2009.

We're offering a variety of programs -- all free -- all designed to be enjoyable to anyone with an interest in archaeology, architecture, history, African-American culture, slave resistance or genealogy over the age of 12 years -- at various times of day -- on various days of the week -- and at 5 different venues -- to celebrate. Thus, you will have a hard time not coming to at least one of the offerings.

Be Creative at Your Local Library

When is the last time you and your family visited your local library? Hopefully, it's not taking you long to answer that question. Certainly most homeschooling families visit the library quite often during the school year but what about during the summer break? Libraries across the nation, including our local Beaufort County Branches, are offering exciting reading contests, programs and activities designed to keep everyone reading, children, teens and adults, during the summer months.

The summer reading program this year is called, Be Creative, and you can still join in all the fun. This week the Beaufort County Branches are hosting a nature education program featuring, Low Country Naturalist, Tony Mills from the LowCountry Institute who brings with him a host of lowcountry animals and will talk about the Lowcountry Ecosystem. We caught the program this morning at the St. Helena Island Branch and had a great time along with a lot of other kids from local summer programs and their counselors, learning about animals that are indigenous to this area as well as some that are transplants and adapting here.

Thursday morning, cartoonist Dave McDonald will be at the St. Helena Branch showing the basics of drawing cartoons. Mr. McDonald, lives in Charlotte, NC and created a coming book character called Hamster Sam and he is becoming very popular. We are looking forward to gaining a few tips from Mr. McDonald on Thursday morning at 10:00 but you can also catch his presentation at the other branches as well. Judge orders homeschoolers into public district classrooms Decides children need more 'focus' despite testing above grade levels

A North Carolina judge has ordered three children to attend public schools this fall because the homeschooling their mother has provided over the last four years needs to be "challenged."
The children, however, have tested above their grade levels – by as much as two years. The decision is raising eyebrows among homeschooling families, and one friend of the mother has launched a website to publicize the issue. The ruling was made by Judge Ned Mangum of Wake County, who was handling a divorce proceeding for Thomas and Venessa Mills. A statement released by a publicist working for the mother, whose children now are 10, 11 and 12, said Mangum stripped her of her right to decide what is best for her children's education.

The judge, when contacted by WND, explained his goal in ordering the children to register and attend a public school was to make sure they have a "more well-rounded education." "I thought Ms. Mills had done a good job [in homeschooling]," he said. "It was great for them to have that access, and [I had] no problems with homeschooling. I said public schooling would be a good complement." The judge said the husband has not been supportive of his wife's homeschooling, and "it accomplished its purposes. It now was appropriate to have them back in public school." Mangum said he made the determination on his guiding principle, "What's in the best interest of the minor children," and conceded it was putting his judgment in place of the mother's. And he said that while he expressed his opinion from the bench in the court hearing, the final written order had not yet been signed. However, the practice of a judge replacing a parent's judgment with his own regarding homeschooling was argued recently when a court panel in California ruled that a family would no longer be allowed to homeschool their own children.

WND reported extensively when the ruling was released in February 2008, alarming homeschool advocates nationwide because of its potential ramifications. Ultimately, the 2nd Appellate District Court in Los Angeles reversed its own order, affirming the rights of California parents to homeschool their children if they choose. The court, which earlier had opined that only credentialed teachers could properly educate children, was faced with a flood of friend-of-the-court briefs representing individuals and groups, including Congress members.

The conclusion ultimately was that parents, not the state, would decide where children are educated. The California opinion said state law permits homeschooling "as a species of private school education" but that statutory permission for parents to teach their own children could be "overridden in order to protect the safety of a child who has been declared dependent."
In the North Carolina case, Adam Cothes, a spokesman for the mother, said the children routinely had been testing at up to two years above their grade level, were involved in swim team and other activities and events outside their home and had taken leadership roles in history club events.

On her website, family friend Robyn Williams said Mangum stated his decision was not ideologically or religiously motivated but that ordering the children into public schools would "challenge the ideas you've taught them." Williams, a homeschool mother of four herself, said, "I have never seen such injustice and such a direct attack against homeschool." "This judge clearly took personal issue with Venessa's stance on education and faith, even though her children are doing great. If her right to homeschool can be taken away so easily, what will this mean for homeschoolers state wide, or even nationally?" Williams asked. Williams said she's trying to rally homeschoolers across the nation to defend their rights as Americans and parents to educate their own children. Williams told WND the public school order was the worst possible outcome for Ms. Mills, who had made it clear she felt it was important to her children that she continue homeschooling. According to Williams' website, the judge also ordered a mental health evaluation for the mother – but not the father – as part of the divorce proceedings, in what Williams described as an attack on the "mother's conservative Christian beliefs."

According to a proposed but as-yet unsigned order submitted by the father's lawyer to Mangum, "The children have thrived in homeschool for the past four years, but need the broader focus and socialization available to them in public school. The Court finds that it is in the children's best interest to continue their homeschooling through the end of the current school year, but to begin attending public school at the beginning of the 2009-2010 instructional year."

The order proposed by the father's lawyer also conceded the reason for the divorce was the father's "adultery," but it specifically said the father would not pay for homeschooling expenses for his children. The order also stated, "Defendant believes that plaintiff is a nurturing mother who loves the children. Defendant believes that plaintiff has done a good job with the homeschooling of the children, although he does not believe that continued homeschooling is in the best interest of the children." The website said the judge also said public school would "prepare these kids for the real world and college" and allow them "socialization." Williams said the mother originally moved into a homeschool schedule because the children were not doing as well as she hoped at the local public schools. In last year's dispute in California, the ruling that eventually was released was praised by pro-family organizations.

"We're pleased the appeals court recognized the rights of parents to provide education for their children," said Jay Sekulow, chief counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice. "This decision reaffirms the constitutional right that's afforded to parents in directing the education of their children. It's an important victory for families who cherish the freedom to ensure that their children receive a high quality education that is inherent in homeschooling." "Parents have a constitutional right to make educational choices for their children," said Alliance Defense Fund Senior Counsel Gary McCaleb. "Thousands of California families have educated their children successfully through homeschooling. We're pleased with the court's decision, which protects the rights of families and protects an avenue of education that has proven to benefit children time and time again.

The North Carolina ruling also resembles a number of rulings handed down against homeschool parents in Germany, where such instruction has been banned since the years of Adolf Hitler's rule. As WND reported, Wolfgang Drautz, consul general for the Federal Republic of Germany, has commented previously on the issue, contending the government "has a legitimate interest in countering the rise of parallel societies that are based on religion."

"The minister of education does not share your attitudes toward so-called homeschooling," said a government letter in response. "... You complain about the forced school escort of primary school children by the responsible local police officers. ... In order to avoid this in future, the education authority is in conversation with the affected family in order to look for possibilities to bring the religious convictions of the family into line with the unalterable school attendance requirement."
WND also reported recently when a German appeals court tossed out three-month jail terms issued to a mother and father who homeschool their children. But the court also ordered new trials that could leave the parents with similar penalties, according to the Home School Legal Defense Association. The case involves Juergen and Rosemarie Dudek of Archfeldt, Germany, who last summer received formal notices of their three-month sentences.

The 90-day sentences came about when Hesse State Prosecutor Herwig Muller appealed a lower court's determination of fines for the family. The ruling had imposed fines of about 900 euros, or $1,200, for not sending their children to school Muller, however, told the parents they shouldn't worry about any fines, since he would "send them to jail," the HSLDA reported. HSLDA spokesman Michael Donnelly warned the homeschooling battle is far from over in Germany. "There continue to be signs that the German government is cracking down on homeschooling families," he reported. "A recent letter from one family in southern Germany contained threats from local school authorities that unless the family enrolled their children in school, they would seek fines in excess of 50,000 euros (nearly $70,000), jail time and the removal of custody of the children."

HSLDA officials estimate there are some 400 homeschool families in Germany, virtually all of them either forced into hiding or facing court actions.

Fire Station Visit a Great Success!

Yesterday, two home school families accepted the invitation extended by Lt. Byrne, community educator from Beaufort Fire station #1 to visit and receive a presentation about fire prevention, survival during a fire, and a number of other things. Our visit began in the Beaufort Fire and Rescue Family Safety Education House which is a converted RV complete with a carpeted stair step seating area in what would have been the dining area, for participants to sit receive instruction.

Lt. Byrne began the presentation with a video presentation to show us just how quickly a fire can start and spread to the point that it engulfs an average family room. The fire on the training video started by a single match dropped into a waste paper basket without any fire inducing agents. Within 2 minutes and 35 seconds the entire room was in flames. We were told to pay close attention to the recliner because it would ignite before any flames reached it and it did. The chemicals in the fabric along with the synthetic wood reached their ignition temperature and the chair burst into flames due to the heat in the room.

We received instruction about cooking fires, one of the top five cause of house fires. Warnings were given about the misuse of extension cords, over loading multiple outlets, and long term use utility cords.

We learned a new danger with candles. Lt. Byrne showed us a candle in a jar that caused a fire in a bathroom. The decorative piece of string around the jar reached its ignition point and ignited into flame. The fire then spread to a box of facial tissue near the jar. The flame from the wick of the candle itself never touched the string so we were quite amazed to know that again, to be aware of the ignition point of objects, not to actually know the temperature but to take it into consideration when we have fires around us.

A substitute for a wax candle is a new electric candle that looks like a wax candle. comes with fragrances but is battery operated.

Children were warned not to play with matches, a classic and still very important. Parents were encouraged to place matches, lighters and any other type of fire started in out of the way, hidden places.

Smoke detectors are still the number one method to warn us of fire in our homes. Instruction about the placement of the smoke detectors in a room or hallway, the care of smoke detectors and new smoke detectors on the market were shared during the presentation. Lt. Byrne informed us of a detector that a parent can record his or her voice with instruction along with the alarm noise.

After leaving the kitchen instruction area, we moved into the bedroom for further instruction. It was there we learned how to stay low to the floor when we smell smoke, touch the door with the back of our hand to detect if it's hot, if so don't open the door move to the window to get out. If the door isn't hot slowly open it to see if there is smoke or fire nearby, if the coast is clear proceed to the nearest exit and then to the meeting point. We practiced this before leaving the room.

After we exited the portable education vehicle we went to the garage where Firefighter Rob assisted Lt. Byrne with a demonstration of firefighter gear. Many children are afraid of firefighters and won't approach them when they are in danger. This activity teaches children to trust the firefighter, allows them to touch gear and watch the firefighter put each piece on. They see the transformation of the firefighter without gear and then completely suited. The lessens the chance that these children will run from the firefighter in the case of a real emergency.

Following this time, the children were given a ride around the block in the fire truck by firefighter Andy. As the truck re-entered the station lot, all the bangs and whistles were sounded and the children were thrilled.

The final instruction for the day was a hands on demonstration of how to properly use a fire extinguisher and we each were allowed to practice this new skill.

Overall, we had a fantastic visit at the fire station. We all learned loads of new information and were reminded of many important things we often let slip. We are thankful for the community education program offered by the Beaufort fire department. The program depends on funding that is very low and may very soon be deleted due to lack of funds. Presently the department has a grant that allows them to purchase and give away smoke detectors to families that don't have one. The presentation we participated in is still available to the public as funding allows.

If you have fire extinguishers that are out dated they can be donated to the fire department for training and demonstrations such as we participated in. The department also accepts monetary donations as well as donations of new smoke detectors. Lt.. Byrne would like to get the word out about fire prevention to the general public. Please don't think you know everything there is to know about fire prevention, you'd be surprised about how much there is to know.

Fire Safety Fieldtrips

We are thankful that Lt Byrne of the Beaufort Fire Department sought to include homeschool students in their fire prevention and safety programs. With his assistance we have orchestrated two field trips for homeschoolers in the Beaufort area.

The first field trip is Saturday, January 24th 10 am for kids (elementary school) this program is focused on fire safety and surviving a fire.

The second fieldtrip is Saturday, January 31st 9:00 am for the adults (middle school and above) the focus is on preventing fires and how to keep our family safe and survival.

Lt. Byrne needs to know numbers so please RSVP to our email address chsb@embarqmail.com by Wednesday, January 21st. When you RSVP please indicate the number of adults, grade and age of your children and which date or dates you will attend. Again Lt. Byrne encourages as many families as possible to attend the programs; he and the staff have a great program with lots of great information. Please pass this information on to other homeschool families you know.

The location for each visit is the station right across from the county building 135 Ribaut Road. You can park in the back of the station. Go down Green St from Ribaut Rd, make the first right, coming from the opposite end of Green St. make the last left, Mt. Sinai Baptist Church is on the corner, turn there. After passing the church property, go through the gate and enter the station parking area. All families are invited to fellowship together at Pigeon Point Park after the January 24th field trip. Pack a lunch to bring along and we can meet, greet, eat and play for an hour or so. A get together for the middle and high school attendees on January 31st is in the works.

The Adventure Has Arrived

The Adventure is the new ship has landed at Charles Towne Landing. The SC State Park website shares this information about the ship.

The Adventure is a 73-foot representation of a 17th-century trading ketch was built at Rockport Marine in Maine and, like its predecessor of the same name, will be used as an educational and interpretive exhibit at Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site. The new Adventure fills the spot left vacant by the original Adventure when it was claimed by the elements after more than 30 years docked at the spot where the first permanent English settlement in the Carolinas was established in 1670. That ship was built as an original attraction at Charles Towne Landing when the park first opened as part of the state’s tri-centennial celebration in 1970. The builders of the second ship also followed the original plans by William Avery Baker, a Colonial ship expert whose credits also included the Mayflower II.

The new Adventure is expected to take about a month to reach its final destination in the marsh-lined creek off Albemarle Point where South Carolina as we know it today was born. There it will be a floating classroom, helping to tell the story of how English settlers, Native Americans and enslaved Africans used land and sea to build the plantation economy of the American South. A welcoming celebration for the ship will be held once it’s in place and secured for visitors to board, tentatively in early November, depending on the weather during the trip. The arrival of the new Adventure culminates the rebuilding process of Charles Towne Landing, a multi-year effort that also has resulted in a new visitors center and museum, replica working cannon embrasures and indentured servants quarters, ongoing archaeology digs and displays, and an interpretive history walking trail.

Adventure Fast Facts:
Length – 50 feet on deck, 73 feet from bowsprit to furthest point, 40 feet on the keel.
Weight – 50 tons. (The anchor weighs 350 pounds.)
Height – The mast, with an extension, measures 53 feet from the hull, 43 feet of that above the deck. (The ship is taller than it is wide.)
Construction – Cedar, pine and oak. The boat took nine months to build.
Masts, sails – Two masts from the desk (main and mizzen), top mast attached to the top of the mainmast, and the bowsprit (which leans horizontally out over the front of the boat.) There are five sails: main, lateen, top, stay and jib.
Diesel Engine – To meet modern requirements, the Adventure is equipped with a 180-horsepower Volvo diesel engine.
Builders – Rockport Marine, an internationally known wooden ship boatyard on Rockport Harbor in Maine. Its work includes the Godspeed II now at Jamestown in Virginia. (www.rockportmarine.com)

CHARLES TOWNE LANDING PROGRAMS

Cannons boom. Muskets bark. Interpretive rangers in 17th century dress tend heirloom crops. They’re all part of the “new” Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site. Here a group of English settlers landed in 1670 and established what would become the birthplace of the Carolinas colony, the plantation system of the American South, and one of the continent’s first major port cities. And here the story is still told. Opened in 1970 as Charles Towne Landing State Park, the peaceful park on a marshy point off the Ashley River was rebuilt in 2006 with a sharpened focus on the site’s remarkable past. Begin with the 12-room, interactive museum in the Visitors Center that includes a “digital dig”. Then walk the self-guided history trail, using the MP3 players that add an audio tour to the experience. Admire the Adventure, a full-size replica sailing ship built onsite, and the authentic experimental crop garden. Talk to archaeologists at work. And leave time for the Animal Forest natural habitat zoo and 80 acres of gardens that includes an elegant live oak alle’ and the Legare-Waring House, one of Charleston’s favorite sites for weddings and other special gatherings.

We contacted Pastor Ralph Gibson about using Shell Point Baptist Church again this year for our homeschool meetings and he has graciously agreed. Our first meeting will be Monday September 29 at 6:30 pm.

At this month’s meeting we will address the topic: Praying for your Homeschool. Prayer is a vital part of the Christian life and is extremely important for the Christian homeschooling family. Have you ever wondered how archaeologists find and identify artifacts from American Revolutionary War battlefields like Musgrove's Mill? Visit Musgrove Mill State Historic Site to learn about the methods used and what studies have been done at the site to shed light on this important battle. Project archaeologists will be on-site showing some of the artifacts that have been found and discussing how they found and identified the artifacts. Tours of the areas where some of the archaeological projects have been performed will be offered throughout the day. Bring the kids and let them participate in some hands-on activities as they "dig" for artifacts.

Poinsett Palmetto Trail Hike
Poinsett State Park
Take a hike with a ranger on the beautiful High Hills of Santee section of the Palmetto Trail. Learn about the rich history that surrounds this park that dates back to the time of the Revolutionary War and the time of Francis Marion, the "Swamp Fox." See the landscape beauty that is found at Poinsett from mountainous terrain to the swampy bogs of the South Carolina lowlands. Historical buildings and structures, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, are also found at Poinsett State Park. The hike will consist of a 2.5 mile section of the Palmetto Trail followed by refreshments including tea, coffee and doughnuts in the historical Tea Room at the park office. The hike will begin at 10:00 from the park office. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a water bottle.

Lowcountry Estuarium Tour

We did it! December 4, 2007 we went to the Lowcountry Estuarium in Port Royal for a great fieldtrip. There were five families present which made it a great number. The Lowcountry Estuarium is a learning center designed to provide hands-on learning about the coastal environments of our beautiful area, such as salt marshes, beaches, coastal waters, and estuaries. The tour began at the Estaurium building with a presentation that featured several tanks with creatures from the Port Royal Sound. After leaving the building we went down to The Sands to get a close look at the sound, along with the plant and animal life there. Most of us found great shells and a few shark teeth. Following the entire tour we went to the Port Royal Park for a lunch fellowship.

Facts about the Estaurium

An estuarium is similar to an aquarium. Aquariums usually have live specimens and exhibits that showcase freshwater or marine species. An estuarium exhibits terrestrial and aquatic specimens that live in brackish water and saltwater environments.

Estuaries are areas where fresh water from the land and salt water from the ocean meet and mix, such as in our coastal rivers. An estuary can be as small as a tidal creek or as large as a bay. Port Royal Sound and St. Helena Sound are estuaries located in Beaufort County.

As a learning center, the Lowcountry Estuarium showcases the unique and special organisms and habitats found in the Lowcountry. Some of the ecosystem exhibits include: Diamond back terrapin habitat - Habitat for several species of crabs - Game fish habitat - Food web interactions - Estuary awareness We learned to respect and take care of our unique ecosystem.

Fabulous Fall Fellowship

We had a fabulous fall fellowship Saturday, November 3rd. The weather was perfect for an outdoor event that featured a great meal of hamburgers and all the fixings, chili, baked beans and lots of chips and luscious desserts to round it off. The time of meeting and greeting, just getting to know a bit more about each other was super though there were a few interruptions by our goats who wanted to get in on the fun!

The kids, human kind, played and ran all about with tag and a host of other outdoor games. The teens had their own time of hanging out on the porch catching up on things and all that. The adults mixed and mingled keeping a watchful eye on the young ones and enjoyed great conversations.

Time came for the campfire and singing which was an even bigger hit this year than before because Neal Tisdale not only brought his guitar but his collection of praise and worship music, and a music stand. Ron Kramps and Byron also had a guitar and we brought an extra one from the house to make a grand total of 4 guitars and there were actually 5 guys who played, wow! Meagan and I play but we bowed out politely and sang instead. Marshmallows were roasted over the campfire, Belle our beagle came over for hugs and pats which abounded from the kids. Overall we had a wonderful time now only enjoying eachother's company but praising God through song!!! Oh what a time we had!!!

Family and Friends Fall Fellowship

The families of the Christian Homeschoolers of Beaufort (CHSB) are hosting our Fall Family and Friends Fellowship and would like very much for you to come and share in the fun of this event. We will share a meal together, play games, have a campfire, roast marshmallows, sing songs and you are welcome to share riddles, jokes, or even a short story. If this sounds like a great way to spend an afternoon and into the evening, then come out and join in the fellowship. CHSB will provide the meats and participating families bring a side dish, dessert or beverages. Please RSVP so we’ll know how much of the main dish we need to provide.

What to expect:
This event for the most part takes place outdoors. There will be activities for everyone!

Please bring:
A flashlight (if you want to play flashlight tag)
A folding chair for each family member
It’s a bit cool in the evenings so you may need a jacket, long sleeved T-shirt or a sweat shirt.
Just before dusk there may still be a few mosquitoes and or sand gnats “no-see-ums” so insect repellant may be needed.

Share the Spirit of Discovery During
2007 South Carolina Archaeology Month

Following is a list of the calendar of events and programs presented
during the Sixteenth Annual South Carolina Archaeology Month
(Oct. 1-31, 2007). Archaeology Month events will be offered not
only in October but also in September through November. Events
and programs have been developed by dedicated professionals,
avocationalists, and organizations in order to bring our state’s
prehistoric and historic past to life for all ages. Through such public
outreach efforts, the archaeological community hopes to build
regional and local public support for the preservation of our Native
American, African, and European heritage.

By sponsoring an annual event like SC Archaeology Month,
the archaeological community of South Carolina intends to:
1) stimulate public pride in our state’s archaeological heritage,
2) increase public understanding of why archaeological research
is important,
3 heighten public awareness of how many archaeological resources
are lost each year in South Carolina,
4) educate the public about what they can do to help protect and
study the state’s archaeological resources, and
5) get more people involved in legitimate archaeological activities.

Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site
Fears That Fortified Charles Towne––Cannon Demonstration
Mar. 1-Nov. 30 (Every Third Sat.)
During the early years of the settlement, the Charles Towne
colonists faced several threats, especially from their primary
enemy and colonial rival, the Spanish. The Spanish fleet at
St. Augustine, Florida was within three days travel of the
fledgling English colony. Charles Towne, "here settled in the
very chaps of the Spaniard," was a direct challenge to the claim
of this disputed land. Following a review of Charles Towne's
fortifications and defenses, the program will culminate with the
Charles Towne Militia living history team's demonstration of
17th century artillery.Meet at the cannons in the fortified area
at 1 PM, 2 PM, and/or 3 PM. Bring water and insect repellent.

Liberty or Death: Rebels & Loyalists in the Southern Piedmont
Exhibition Opening Jun. 25, 2006-Dec. 31, 2007
This an interactive exhibition on the Revolutionary War in the
Carolina backcountry between 1780-1782 made possible by a
grant from the Watson-Brown Foundation. Free with museum

Clothes to Dye For Tour
Nov. 1 (Thurs.)
Join the curator of Clothes to Dye For: Colorful Textiles from
the Charleston Museum Collection or Museum staff for a
guided tour of the exhibit. Learn about four centuries of
garments worn by Charlestonians and dyeing processes used
to achieve these rich shades and hues. These curator-led tours
of Clothes to Dye For are available the first Thursday of the
month throughout the exhibit run. No reservations are

20th Annual Archaeology Field Day: A Taste of Archaeology:
How Food HasInfluenced the Archaeological Record
Oct. 20 (Sat.) The 20th annual South Carolina Archaeology
Field Day will be held on October 20 at Historic Brattonsville.
This year's theme is on “Foodways.A Taste of Archaeology:
How Food Has Influenced the Archaeological Record." Visit
with archaeologists from around the state while they discuss
how Carolinians have been eating for the last 12,000 years!
Watch demonstrators interpret archaeological data to present
how Carolinians gathered, prepared, cooked, and served food
from the Lowcountry to the Piedmont.Learn about archaeology
and Low Country Foodways, Revolutionary War Camp Kitchen,
Kitchenware from the Blacksmith, 18th Century Scotts-Irish
Archaeology, Artifacts from Spanish Wells, 19th Century
Moonshine, Maritime Foodways, and Moravian Kitchenwares.
There will also be demonstrations on hot rock cooking,
friction fire, forests, and food, cooking with clay–– Aboriginal
clay pots, Catawba foodways,atlatl and blowgun hunting,
and archaeology of fishing. The public will also see actual
excavations of a country store. Kids will participate in a dig,
make bricks, turn rope, shuck and grind corn, and much more.

them identified by a professional archaeologist. Tour
Historic Brattonsville’s property, and visit 18th and 19th

The Frontier Rifleman
Oct. 20 (Sat.)
Perhaps no other figure from the American Revolution has been more
romanticized than the frontier rifleman. And, while the reality may not
live up to the legend, the frontier rifleman did prove to be an invaluable
asset to the Patriot cause, particularly at places like the Battle of
Musgrove's Mill. Visit us at Musgrove Mill State Historic Site to learn about
the lifestyle, arms, equipment, and function of the frontier rifleman during

Beyond the Gravestone

Have you ever strolled through a cemetery and looked at old
gravestones? Many are decorated with designs, quotes, or engravings
that had special meaning for the deceased or their loved ones. Take a
walk with us throughthe Beech Island Cemetery where Governor
Hammond and many of his descendants are buried. Learn about
gravestone motifs and the movement to protect, preserve, and document
cemetery history. Special instructions and alternatives to the traditional
gravestone rubbings will be discussed so that you may capture interesting
designs without damaging these fragile markers. Meet at the plantation

Kings Mountain State Park
Farm Festival at the Farm
Oct. 27 (Sat.)
Hayrides, storytellers, a blacksmith in the forge, re-enactors, and
pumpkins come together to celebrate Halloween and the fall harvest
at the Living History Farm. Pumpkins will be given away to visitors
until the field is empty. Night tours will be given by re-enactors for the
not so faint at heart, while a bonfire provides light and warmth for those

Musgrove Mill State Historic Site
Battle of Blackstock’s Anniversary Celebration
Nov. 17 (Sat.)
On November 20, 1780, General Thomas Sumter and his men fought
Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton and a small, but well trained force
of British soldiers at theBlackstock's Plantation in modern-day Union
County. On Saturday, November 17, 2007, Musgrove Mill State Historic
Site will be presenting the Battle of Blackstock's Anniversary Celebration.
The event will feature an interpretive talk on the Battle of Blackstock's
and its significance, a Ranger-led tour of the battlefield, a period firing
salute, and commemorations by the Daughters of the American Revolution
and the Sons of the American Revolution. The event will be held at
1 PM at Blackstock Battlefield Historic Site. For more information

Broadway Comes To Town

Three members of CHSB will debut in the musical production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat this weekend. Byron, Peter and Sarah Jones are members of the cast that has worked extremely hard since August on the songs, dance and dialogue of this wonderful musical. All that work will be showcased this Friday and Saturday and the Baptist Church of Beaufort. Shows are Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday 3:00 and 7:00 p.m. For all of the details, click on the poster.

Estuarium Day at the Library

The Children and Young Adult Department of the Beaufort County Library hosted Estuary Day, Wednesday, September 26 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Mr Bob Bender, curator of the Lowcountry Estuarium in Port Royal shared information about the Estuary in the Port Royal Sound, the St. Helena Sound and the many creatures and plants found in it.

The presentation featured numerous slides, demonstrations, personal stories and animals in their own aquariums. The Children and Young Adult Services Director, Maria Benac, had a lovely spread of snacks and beverages for all in attendance. There were homeschoolers, high school students from Beaufort High and the winner of the Estuarium's poster contest, a student at Mossy Oaks Elementary.

Our special thanks to "Ms. Maria" and the library for inviting Mr. Bender and to Mr. Bender for the most informative presentation.

First Meeting for 2007-08 School Year

The September meeting of the Christian Homeschoolers of Beaufort was Monday the 24th at the Beaufort County Library Paul Siegmund Meeting Room. Our guest speaker for the evening Rachel Ward, is the administrator for Homeward Education Association, a third-option association located in Sumter, SC. Rachel covered several homeschool topics, shared her experience as a homeschool mom and opened the floor for questions. A variety of questions and concerns were raised including preparing for college, testing, and record keeping (grades, transcripts).

Information about upcoming changes to expect, requirements for high school students, qualifications for scholarships, news from the SC Commission on Education, and the importance of legal assistance groups like HSLDA, statewide accountability groups and local support groups.

We were pleased to meet several homeschool families who are new to the area, others who are interested in joing CHSB and those who specifically came to hear Rachel Ward. It was a lovely evening filled with great fellowship and we look forward to having more of like kind during the school year.

CHSB strongly encourages families to select one of the legal options outlined in South Carolina Home Schooling Statutes. There are currently three options from which to choose. However, compulsory school age* and required subjects** apply to all home educators regardless of which option they select.

South Carolina Law Compulsory School Age: "five years of age before September first until...seventeenth birthday or graduation from high school"; five-year-olds may be excused from kindergarten with submission of written notice to the school district.

South Carolina Law Required Subjects: Reading, writing, math, science, and social studies; Also composition and literature in grades 7-12

WHAT WE BELIEVE
We believe the Bible is the word of God written without error. We believe that the Bible is our sole authority which reveals God, the fall of man, the way to salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ, and God's Plan and purpose for the ages.

We believe in one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

We believe that salvation is by grace. The conditions for salvation are confession and belief in Jesus Christ, who knew no sin, but died a substitutionary death on Calvary for the world, being made sin for us. He arose from the grave, ascended into heaven, and is now our advocate and High Priest at the right hand of the Father.

We believe that men are justified by faith alone, and are accounted righteous before God only through the merit of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
