Quilled Holiday Cards

Our Library offers a class to teach the basics of paper filigree.

Quilling, or the art of paper filigree, is an easy craft with impressive results. Learn the basics of this beautiful technique, and make a holiday card for your loved ones. Supplies will be provided. Registration is required. Call 255-6487 for more information.

Quilling, or paper filigree, is the art of creating intricate shapes from strips of paper. The technique is simple: After a long, narrow ribbon of paper is rolled around a needle like tool, the strip is slipped off, arranged with your fingertips into the desired shape, and then glued to a background of contrasting paper, fabric, or wood.

Quilled motifs such as flowers and hearts express sweet sentiments for Valentine's Day and Mother's Day, but they also add an elegant touch to cards for any occasion.

Decorate an Edible Gingerbread House!

The local library is always a great place to go for activities and interaction with other kids.  My local branch is the St. Helena Branch here on St. Helena Island.  The Children's Department is headed by Mrs. Kathleen McTeer and her assistant is Mr.s Vera Bradley.  These two lovely ladies are offering children to make and decorate Gingerbread Houses.  Please see the library announcement and save the date!

 Join Ms. Vera and Ms. Kathleen while we construct and decorate Gingerbread Houses to take home and eat. Ice the roof for snow, add square candies for windows and maybe add shingles if you like! Find out where these delicious treats originated and listen to a story or two while you create.
All materials will be supplied.
No registration required.
Ages 4-7 welcome.

Be Creative at Your Local Library

When is the last time you and your family visited your local library? Hopefully, it's not taking you long to answer that question. Certainly most homeschooling families visit the library quite often during the school year but what about during the summer break? Libraries across the nation, including our local Beaufort County Branches, are offering exciting reading contests, programs and activities designed to keep everyone reading, children, teens and adults, during the summer months.

The summer reading program this year is called, Be Creative, and you can still join in all the fun. This week the Beaufort County Branches are hosting a nature education program featuring, Low Country Naturalist, Tony Mills from the LowCountry Institute who brings with him a host of lowcountry animals and will talk about the Lowcountry Ecosystem. We caught the program this morning at the St. Helena Island Branch and had a great time along with a lot of other kids from local summer programs and their counselors, learning about animals that are indigenous to this area as well as some that are transplants and adapting here.

Thursday morning, cartoonist Dave McDonald will be at the St. Helena Branch showing the basics of drawing cartoons. Mr. McDonald, lives in Charlotte, NC and created a coming book character called Hamster Sam and he is becoming very popular. We are looking forward to gaining a few tips from Mr. McDonald on Thursday morning at 10:00 but you can also catch his presentation at the other branches as well. Estuarium Day at the Library

The Children and Young Adult Department of the Beaufort County Library hosted Estuary Day, Wednesday, September 26 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. Mr Bob Bender, curator of the Lowcountry Estuarium in Port Royal shared information about the Estuary in the Port Royal Sound, the St. Helena Sound and the many creatures and plants found in it.

The presentation featured numerous slides, demonstrations, personal stories and animals in their own aquariums. Estuaries are areas where fresh water from the land and salt water from the ocean meet and mix, such as in our coastal rivers. An estuary can be as small as a tidal creek or as large as a bay. Port Royal Sound and St. Helena Sound are estuaries located in Beaufort County.

The Children and Young Adult Services Director, Maria Benac, had a lovely spread of snacks and beverages for all in attendance. There were homeschoolers, high school students from Beaufort High and the winner of the Estuarium's poster contest, a student at Mossy Oaks Elementary.
